みくに国際学園 初代学長
ノーマン・D・シャムウェイ
アリゾナ州出身。ユタ大学、及びカリフォルニア大学ハスティングス法律学校を卒業。カリフォルニアで数年間、法律業務に従事した後、アメリカ合衆国下院議員として選出され12年に渡り政界で活躍した。その後カリフォルニア州公益事業委員会の委員となる。一方、クリスチャンとして教会においても熱心に召しを全うし、青年期（1954-1958年）には宣教師として来日。その後も、日本広島伝道部会長、北アジア地域広報部長、東京神殿神殿宣教師として奉仕。教会代表の接待ディレクターとして、ニューヨークの国連、ソルトレイクシティ、及びボストンでも務めを果たした。6人の子供と36人の孫、16人のひ孫がいる。趣味は、音楽、盆栽、ハイキング、家族歴史、アメリカ及び国際政治、インターネット検索。2009年に、自伝「Times and Seasons of Norman D. Shumway 」を出版。

シャムウェイ学長のお招きにより、５ヶ月前、私たちはみくに国際学園の校長として、またインストラクターとして奉仕するために湯沢にやって参りました。みくにの素晴らしさについては、予めシャムウェイご夫妻からお伺いしておりましたが、その後実際に私たちが経験したことは、私たちの想像を更に上回る素晴らしいものでした。
若い生徒達は真剣に英語を学んでおり、知的であると同時に非常に霊的で、大変強い証を持っていました。また音楽の才能も豊かで、彼らの料理（食べることも）の才能や素敵な笑顔にも、大変感銘を受けました。
将来日本の指導者となるであろう若者達と、共に学び触れ合うことで、私たちも大いに学び、また成長することができました。彼らと共に暮らし、また彼らの笑い声、歌声、そして祈りと共にあるとき、私たちも彼らと同じくらい、若々しい気持ちになることができました。
彼らが大学生として歩み始めるときに、このみくににおける経験を踏まえて、各人の選択に応じて勤勉に、忍耐強く努力することができるでしょう。また霊的にも精神的にも、更に大きく成長するであろうことを、確信しています。
この優れた組織に参加し、素晴らしい経験をすることができたことを、心より感謝申し上げます。

At the invitation of President Shumway we came to Yuzawa five months ago to serve as Principal/Instructors at Mikuni International College. While we had several conversations with President and Sister Shumway about the college we were not prepared for the wonderful experiences awaiting for us at Mikuni.
Little did we know that we would be meeting such an outstanding group of young people who were seriously working to improve their English skills.
Little did we know the powerhouse spirituality of these young men and women with great testimonies.
Little did we know of their cooking (and eating) talents, their musical abilities, their intelligence and their wonderful smiling countenances.
Little did we realize how much we would learn and grow by associating and studying with the future leaders of Japan.
Little did we realize how young we would feel by being with these young men and women, listening to their laughter, singing, praying and studying with them.
As each of them is at the beginning of their college careers we are confident that their experience at Mikuni will enable them to excel in whatever they choose to do especially if they are diligent, patient and continually strive to nourish their spirits as well as their minds. We are grateful for the wonderful opportunity we have had to have been associated with this marvelous institution.
We love the Mikuni school and are so happy to be here! It has been an amazing experience. We love teaching, playing, working, cooking and growing spiritually with our awesome students here.
There are 5 of us in our family: Geoff, Rachel, Kai, Hana and Aya. Here is a little bit about each of us.
Geoff served as a missionary in 1999-2001 in the Nagoya mission and then the Tokyo North mission when the boundaries changed. He then attended BYU (Provo) and graduated in Japanese studies for his undergraduate degree and went on to receive his MPA (Master of Public Administration) and masters of second language teaching with Japanese emphasis. Geoff loves teaching English and Japanese and feels passionate about helping the youth of Japan suceed. He has had the opportunity to teach at BYU and University of Hawaii and now Mikuni. He loves the Japanese people, language and the food, especially ramen. He loves being a husband and father and feel blessed to be able to share this experience in Japan with his family. As well as being the principal, Geoff teaches 3 classes and is working on improving the curriculum and meeting student’s individual language learning needs.
Rachel met Geoff in the Nagoya mission when they were serving in the same district in Gifu. They met again at BYU in the Japanese major and dating in Japan the summer Geoff was there for his internship in Matsumoto. They were married in the Provo temple in February 2005. Rachel worked at the BYU international programs office for several years and love helping students have amazing study abroad experiences all over the world. She also worked at the BYU student life office after she graduated. Rachel is a professional organizer (片づけコンサルタント) and loves helping people organize and simplify their homes and offices and also loves teaching cooking and meal planning classes. She teaches the Modern American Culture class and organizes the activities. She is also working on organizing the school and student apartments.
Hana and Aya are Geoff and Rachel’s 2 daughters. Hana is 10 years old and Aya is 6 years old. They both love it here in Japan! They do homeschool in the morning with Rachel and enjoy spending time with the Mikuni students in the afternoons and evenings. Aya keeps all of us laughing and Hana helps the correct English in the writing class she attends with the students.
We also have an “adopted” Japanese son named Kai, who was living with us in Utah so he could attend a private American high school. He is currently in Utah with another family while we are in Japan and we miss him a lot. He is a great break dancer and artist and is a really fun older brother to the girls. We hope he can come to Mikuni in the future.
わたしたちは、みくに国際学園が大好きで，ここに来て、この上ないすばらしい経験ができることを心からに喜んでいます。みくにのすばらしい生徒たちに教え、ともに遊び、働き、料理し、霊的に成長できる機会をとても大切に思っています。
ビーシンガー家は、ジェフ、レイチェル、カイ、ハナ、アヤの５人家族です。ここで，家族一人一人を紹介したいと思います。
ジェフは、1999年から2001年にかけて、ちょうど伝道部の管轄範囲が変更された時期に、名古屋伝道部と東京南伝道部で宣教師として奉仕しました。その後、BYU（プロボ）の日本語学科で学士課程を卒業し、大学院で行政学と第二言語教育（日本語）の修士課程を修了しました。英語と日本語を教えることが大好きで、日本の青少年が成功できるようサポートしたいという熱意があります。BYUとハワイ大学（University of Hawaii）で教えた経験があり、今はみくに学園で教えています。日本の人々や日本語、日本の食べ物が大好きで、特にラーメンには目がありません。良き夫、良き父親であり、家族とともに日本で生活できる経験が大きな祝福だと感じています。今、みくに国際学園の校長として、３つのクラスを教えながら、カリキュラムを改善し、生徒各々の学習のニーズを満たすよう努力しています。
レイチェルは、同じ名古屋伝道部で宣教師として奉仕していたときに、同じ任地の岐阜でジェフと出会いました。その後、二人はBYUの日本語クラスで再会し、ジェフ兄弟がインターンシップとして松本に滞在していたときには日本でデートし、2005年の2月にプロボ神殿で結婚しました。レイチェルは、BYUの国際プログラムオフィスに数年間勤め、世界各国からの留学生をサポートする仕事に携わってきました。また、プロの片付けコンサルタントであり、卒業後はBYU student life office で働きました。彼女は、人々が家やオフィスでモノを整理整頓し簡素化できるよう助け、料理や食事のプランニングを教えることが大好きです。みくに学園では、Modern American Cultureクラスを受け持ち、活動を担当しています。同時に、学校と学生寮の管理もしています。
二人の娘はハナとアヤといいます。ハナは10歳でアヤは6歳です。二人ともここ日本での生活が大好きです！ 午前中は、レイチェルと家庭学習を行い、午後と夕方はみくにの生徒たちとともに楽しい時間を過ごしています。アヤはわたしたちを笑わせてくれ、ハナはライティングのクラスで生徒たちが正しく英語を書けるよう助けてくれます。
わたしたちには、もう一人、アメリカの私立高校に通っているカイという日本人の「養子」がいます。わたしたちが日本のいる間、彼はユタの別の家族のもとにおり、彼と離れているのがとても寂しいです。彼は、ブレイクダンスが得意なアーティストで、ハナとアヤにとっては面白いお兄ちゃんです。いつか、カイがみくにに来れるようにと願っています。
