Samuel was the judge and prophet of Israel.
サムエルはイスラエルのさばきづかさで預言者であった。
He went to every city to judge the people.
すべての町に行き人々をさばいた。
When Samuel became old, he chose his sons to be judges.
サムエルが年を取ったとき、息子をさばきづかさに選んだ。
They weren't good judges.
息子たちは良いさばきづかさではなかった。
The elders of Israel came to Samuel and said the people didn't want judges.
イスラエルの長老たちはサムエルのところにやってきてさばきづかさはいらないと言った。
They wanted a king.
王がはほしいと言った。
Samuel prayed to God.
サムエルは神に祈った。
God told him to do what the people wanted.
神は人々のほしがることをするように言った。
God knew they wanted a king.
神は人々が王を欲していることをご存知だった。
They didn't want God to lead them.
人々は神に導かれるのをいやがっていた。
God told Samuel to tell them the wicked things that a king could do.
神はサムエルに王が悪事を働くということを人々に告げるように命じた。
Samuel obeyed God.
サムエルは神に従った。
He told the people God would let them have a king, but kings would take their fields and animals.
サムエルは、神は王を立てることは許すが、王は人々の土地や財産(家畜)を奪ってしまうと人々に伝えた。
They would take their children for servants.
また王は子供達を召使いにしてしまうこともある。
Someday, they wouldn't want a king.
そして、いつか王をいやがるときがやってくる。
One day God talked to Samuel.
ある日、神はサムエルに話された。
He said a young man would come the next day.
翌日一人の青年がサムエルのところにやってくる。
This man would be the king.
この青年が王になれる。
The next day a young man came to Samuel.
次の日、青年がサムエルのところにやって来た。
He was a righteous Israelite.
この青年は正しいイスラエル人だった。
He was big and strong.
大きくて強かった。
His name was Saul.
名前をサウルと言った。名前をサウルと言った。
Samuel asked Saul to stay with him.
サムエルはサウルに一緒にいるように言った。
Samuel anointed Saul with oil.
サムエルはサウルの頭に油を注いだ。
Saul was to be the king of Israel.
サウルはイスラエルの王となるのである。
Samuel called all the Israelites together.
