After Joshua died, God chose new leaders for the Israelites.
ジョシュアが死んだ後、神はイスラエルの民のために新しい指導者たちを選ばれた。
They were called judges.
彼らは士師と呼ばれた。
Eli was one of the judges.
エリは士師の一人であり、
He was also God’s priest.
神の祭司でもあった。
He took care of the tabernacle.
彼は幕屋を管理し、
He burned sacrifices for the people.

One day a woman named Hannah came to the tabernacle to pray.
ある日、ハンナという一人女が幕屋に祈りにやって来た。
She was sad because she had no children.
彼女は子供がなかったため悲しんでいた。
Hannah asked God to let her have a baby boy.
ハンナは神に男の子を授けてくださるように嘆願し、
She promised to teach the baby to obey God.
その子が神に従うように教え、
She would take him to the tabernacle to serve God.
神に仕えるように幕屋に連れて来ると約束した。
Eli heard Hannah pray.
エリはハンナの祈りを聞き、
He told her God would give her a baby boy.
神は男の子を授けてくださるだろうとハンナに言った。
Hannah was happy, and God blessed her.
ハンナは嬉しく思い、神はハンナを祝福された。
She had a baby boy.
ハンナは男の子を授かった。
She named him Samuel.
そしてその子をサミュエル(聖書ではサムエル)と名づけた。
Hannah took good care of Samuel.
ハンナはサミュエルを大切に育てた。
One day Hannah took Samuel to Eli.
ある日ハンナはサミュエルをエリの所に連れて行き、
She asked Eli to teach Samuel to do God’s work.
神の御業を行うように教えてほしいと頼んだ。
Hannah left Samuel with Eli and went home.
ハンナはエリにサミュエルを預けて家に帰った。
Samuel learned to help others.
サミュエルは他の人を助ける事を学んだ。
God was happy with him.
神は彼の事を嬉しく思った。
The people who came to the tabernacle liked Samuel.
幕屋にやって来た人々はサミュエルのことを気に入った。
Eli had two sons.
エリには二人の息子がいて、
They helped him at the tabernacle, too, but they did not help the people.
彼らは幕屋で父親を手助けをしていたが、彼らは他の人々を助けることをせず、
They did many wicked things.
悪い事をたくさんした。
The people told Eli his sons were wicked.
人々はエリに彼の息子達が邪悪であると告げた。
But Eli still let his sons work in the tabernacle.
しかしエリは息子達にそのまま続けて幕屋で働かせた。
One day God sent a prophet to Eli.
ある日、神はエリに預言者を遣わされた。
The prophet told Eli God was not happy with his sons.
預言者はエリに、神は息子達のことを嬉しく思っていないと伝えた。
They had the priesthood, but they were not righteous.
彼らは神権を持っているが、義にかなってはなく、
They could not keep the priesthood.
もはや神権を保つ事はできないと言った。
God would give the priesthood to a righteous man.
神は正しい人に神権を与えられるのである。
The prophet said Eli’s sons would be killed.
預言者は、エリの息子達は殺されるだろうと言った。
Eli was very sad.
エリはとても悲しく思った。
One night Eli was in bed.
ある夜エリが寝床に入っていて、
Samuel was in bed in another room.
サミュエルは別の部屋の寝床に入っていると、
Samuel heard someone call his name.
サミュエルは誰かが自分の名前を呼ぶのを聞いた。
Samuel thought Eli had called him.
サミュエルはエリが自分のことを呼んだものと思い、
He ran to Eli.
走ってエリの所に行った。
Eli said he had not called Samuel.
エリはサミュエルのことを呼んではいないと言い、
He told Samuel to lie down again, and Samuel did.
また戻って休むように言ってからサミュエルはそうした。
Samuel heard someone call his name three times.
サミュエルは誰かが自分の名前を呼ぶのを三度聞いた。
Each time he went to Eli. And each time Eli told Samuel to go back to bed.
その度にエリの所に行ったが、エリはサミュエルに寝床に戻るように言った。
At last Eli told Samuel that God was calling him.
ついにエリは神がサミュエルを呼んでいるのだと彼に告げた。
Eli told Samuel to go to his room and to listen to God.
エリはサミュエルに自分の部屋へ戻り神の言う事を聞くように言った。
God told Samuel Eli had let his sons be wicked.
神はサミュエルに、エリが自分の息子達を悪くさせたと言われた。
So Eli and his sons could not work in the tabernacle.
そうであるからエリと彼の息子達は幕屋で働く事はできない、
They would die.
彼らは死ぬであろうと言われた。
In the morning Samuel told Eli what God said.
次の日の朝サミュエルはエリに、神が言われた事を伝えた。
Eli knew that God had spoken to Samuel.
エリは神がサミュエルに語られたのを知った。
Later Eli’s sons were killed in battle.
その後エリの息子達は戦いで死に、
Eli died when he heard about his sons.
エリは息子たちのことを聞くと倒れて死んだ。
Samuel grew up, and God blessed him.
サミュエルは成長し、神は彼を祝福された。
God chose Samuel to be the new prophet and judge.
神はサミュエルを新しい預言者と士師として選ばれた。
Samuel had the priesthood.
サミュエルは神権を授かった。
God came to Samuel and spoke to him.
神はサミュエルを訪れられ彼に語られた。
All the people knew Samuel was a prophet of God.
すべての人々はサミュエルが神の預言者になったことを知った。
