Activities:

Monster Portrait –

Have the students draw a picture of a monster. Then, have them label the different parts of the monster’s body.

Name that Part –

Have students stand up and take a step forward. Ask what parts of their body they used to walk (foot, leg). Have students sit down and pat the part of their body that makes noises when it’s hungry (belly). Have students take a deep breath. Ask what part of their body moves when they breathe (chest). Have students wave to you. Ask what parts of their body they used to wave (hand, arm). Have students look over their shoulder. Ask what part of their body they turned (head). Tell students that all of these parts put together make up their body.

Hand to Hand –

Have the students place their hands palms-to-palms with another student. Have them count the number of fingers on each hand. Ask students to tell how many fingers each person has on each hand. Have them compare the shapes and sizes of their fingers and hands. Ask them to tell what they found. Reinforce that while most students have two hands with five fingers on each one, the shapes and sizes, and perhaps the color, are different.

Do the Hokey Pokey-

Watch this video and do the Hokey Pokey.

Do Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes-

Watch this video and do the motions along with it.

Games:

Simon Says-

This is the game “Simon Says” but using the word “teacher”, or your name, instead. Go straight into the game by saying “Teacher says touch your (knees)”. Do the action and make sure everyone else follows along. Do a few more “touch your

eyes, touch your toes”, etc. Then at some point give a command without the “Teacher says” part (e.g. “Touch your mouth”). First time round, everyone will touch their mouth, so make it very clear that they shouldn’t do this when you don’t say “Teacher says”. After a while your students will get the hang of it. Play the game faster and faster. When a student makes a mistake they have to sit the rest of the game out. The last student standing is the winner.

Body Part Dance –

Help each student write their name on a sheet of paper. Then, place this piece of paper on the floor. Have each child dance around the room while music plays. Once the music stops, they must return to their paper and point to the body part that you yell out, such as “Leg”.

Making Monsters –

Have two dice, one with body parts written on the six sides and the other with the usual numbers. (You can print out and make your own dice here). Students then draw the combination that comes up, e.g. giving their monster six eyes.

Stuck On You-

Pair the students off & have them stand at one end of the classroom. Each pair of students draws 2 cards from the bag; these are the body parts that will be ‘stuck’ together (e.g., hand & nose). After all the students are ‘stuck’ they must race to the other side of the classroom & back. Penalize or disqualify any pairs that become unstuck during the course of the race.
