Activities:
Coloring Corner-
Have the students draw and color their favorite animal. Have them write, in English, the name of the animal on the sheet of paper. You can also have them show the rest of the class their pictures, and ask the class what sound that animal makes.
Puppet Fun-
Go to this website and print out the templates for the animals. Cut the animals out and put them on popsicle sticks to make puppets. Review what the name of each animal is and what sound it makes. Then read the book and while the kids hold the puppets, have them stand and make their animal sound when they hear their animal.
Missing Vowels–
Print out this worksheet and have the students fill in the missing vowels for each animal.
Games:
Pin the Tail on the Polar Bear-
Draw a picture of a polar bear on the board. Cut out little tails for each of the children. With their eyes closed, have the students try to pin it on the tail on the polar bear. Whoever is closest, wins!
Find the Animals-
Before your students arrive, hide several animal cards (use the printables from the “Puppet Fun” activity above) around the room. Draw a Zoo on the blackboard. Before you start, explain to the children that the Zoo Keeper’s animals got out of their cage. The children are to search and collect the animals and return them to their home. Tape the cards on the board as each child finds them.
Animal Charades-
Have one child be “It.” Whisper in their ear the name of an animal. The student will then act out the animal while the other children try to guess what it is.
Animal Parade-
Have the children form a circle. One person is chosen to be the leader. The leader calls the name of a child and names an animal. The child does an imitation of the animal named. After everyone has had a chance to imitate an animal, all players form a line for an “Animal Parade” led by the leader. The group moves around the room, each imitating the animal he/she represents.
Zookeeper Says-
Like “Simon Says,” but instead of saying “Simon” say “Zookeeper says.” The teacher can play this with animals sounds or actions. The kids must listen carefully to whether the teacher says “Zookeeper says” or not before mimicking the action.
