Expectations and Commitments

The mission of MIC is to develop strong disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Church”), and in their communities, and to help students obtain sufficient English language ability to be accepted into a Church-owned college or to improve their own chances for schooling or employment in Japan or elsewhere.

MIC is a live-in community, as a result it also functions like a family, with each member of the community having a significant effect on each other. Each member should strive to lift and help each other to achieve his or her best by being committed to the following standards and goals:

As an intern for Mikuni International College, I agree to the following:

  1. Church Standards. Keep all Church standards and the Mikuni Honor Code.  This includes no viewing of pornography; no sexual relations; dressing modestly–avoiding extreme dress or hair styles; no swearing; no lying; no cheating; no alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs usage in the lodges, homes, rooms, or schools at any time.
  2. Relationships with Students.  Do not have time alone, one on one, with any student male or female.  Avoid compromising situations, and work in rooms with other people present.  Do not flirt, or “lead–on” any student toward any real or imagined romantic relationship. Do not go into the condos or lodges of the opposite sex for any reason.  You may meet in the common areas at the Villa, or at the school only.
  3. Church Meetings, Family Home Evening and Devotionals. Actively participate in Church meetings, weekly Family Home Evening gatherings and in all morning devotionals. Non-members are strongly encouraged to attend church meetings, ask questions, and interact with church members to build friendships, develop social skills, receive social and emotional support, and build faith in Christ as desired.
  4. Participation in the Homes. Participate in planning, preparing and eating meals with the students, in the homes (or school), and initiate conversations with them. Encourage the students to speak English in the homes at all times. Encourage good study habits, wholesome evening activities and consistent bedtimes.
  5. Keep Lodgings Safe and CleanCare for MIC Property. Participate in weekly cleaning assignments on the day assigned, and do the job well. Take care of, respect and not damage, steal, or cause or allow to fall into disrepair any property of MIC, or property of others.  Strive to conserve energy and water, both at lodgings and at the school, and sort correctly and remove all garbage in a timely manner. Keep personal belongings put away when not in use. Keep the bedroom area orderly: bed’s made, and free from garbage and food debris.
  6. Bedtime and Waking. Go to bed, with all electronics and lights turned off, no later than 11:00 pm. This means no after hours use of any phones, tablets or computers or the like where it could disturb students sleep, or goals  Focus on being in harmony with the students bedtimes and rising times.
  7. Intern Responsibilities:
    1. Complete required training before and during the semester as scheduled with your MIC supervisor.
    2. Work with staff and students in a positive and friendly manner to meet the Mikuni goals for academic and social growth.
    3. Prepare during free class hours for teaching responsibilities.  Support other interns and faculty as needed.  Mentor and work with students as needed.
    4. Set up classes during the 10 minute break before class, and be ready to teach on the hour, and dismiss class promptly at 10 minutes to the hour.
    5. Make class plans in advance.  Take time to peer review and discuss the plan.  After the class, record the results of the class–what went well, how did the students respond etc.
    6. Give assignments that are measurable for academic growth.  Record and evaluate the progress of each student.
    7. Create lesson plans for a substitute if traveling occurs while you are a teacher.
  8. Intern Goals
    1. Work toward 100% of students ready to pass the TOEFL test by their goal time!
    2. Promote independent learning among students by mentoring study and organizational techniques that lead to defined results.
    3. Become a disciple of Christ and show charity toward all MIC members.
  9. Use of Japanese by Teachers. The teacher has discretion to use Japanese for the purpose of clarification and instruction in learning and teaching English.

Using AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wonderful tool that you can use to assist you in your language teaching, and we want to help you to learn to use it effectively while maintaining high standards. As an institution, we aim to promote each teacher’s professional development; in order to accomplish this, we ask teachers to challenge themselves and dedicate careful thought to their classes, homework, and activities without the use of AI. However, there may be times that using AI can be appropriate and helpful in your preparation.

The following are examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI:

Appropriate uses Inappropriate uses X
Asking AI for ideas to meet a specific need in your class and then reviewing its responses judiciously. Asking AI to make lesson plans for you without considering the best ways to address your individual student’s needs.
Asking AI to generate something for you and then reading over it to ensure it is good quality and a good match for your class. Asking AI to plan or generate something for you and not reading over it afterwards to evaluate its effectiveness, accuracy, or appropriacy for the class.
Asking AI for advice on how to improve your lesson plan, homework, or activity. Asking AI to adjust your work without reading over the changes or trying to understand them.
Asking AI for examples to gather inspiration and use as a model. Using AI lesson formats without considering if they are similar to models supported by research or if there are better alternatives for your students.

If you use AI, please use it to help you improve and grow in your English teaching abilities and always ensure you are providing the best quality to your students.
