Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, provides an opportunity for university students to work as interns at Mikuni International College. Positions are open every semester on campus. During the Spring/Summer terms, teaching positions are available in locations all around Japan. Interns have been placed in Yokohama, Kyoto, Kagoshima, Sapporo, Sendai, and many other places in the past. Ask us to learn about where opportunities are available this year.
While at Mikuni, interns will have opportunities to teach English courses, study Japanese, live with Japanese students, and participate in cultural exchanges with students from all over Japan. COURSES
Required
Interns are to enroll in twelve credit hours for winter or fall semesters or spring-summer terms combined during their internship in Japan.
Courses include JAPAN 399R Academic Internship (6 credit hours).
Electives
Students will be able to discuss other course offerings for the program with Professor Watabe.
COST
$4,500–5,000
Includes: tuition, accommodations in Japan, and international health insurance
Not included: international airfare and local transportation
PREPARATION
Students are required to take a teaching methodology course (JAPAN 377) prior to departure.
Accepted students are required to participate in a preparation course (IAS 369R, 1 credit hour). This second-block evening course will be held during winter semester.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program.
Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships)
The College of Humanities and Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages may have funding specifically for internships, for those majoring in Japanese. Please check with Professor Watabe for details.
APPLICATION PROCESS

The application requires a $35 fee.
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program.
FACULTY
