There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. There once was a very large lake here, the largest lake in Texas. That was over a hundred years ago. Now it is just a dry, flat wasteland<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n There used to be a town of Green Lake as well. The town shriveled<\/strong><\/span> and dried up along with the lake, and the people who lived there.<\/p>\n During the summer the daytime temperature hovers<\/strong><\/span> around ninety-five degrees in the shade\u2014 if you can find any shade. There’s not much shade in a big dry lake.<\/p>\n The only trees are two old oaks on the eastern edge of the “lake.” A hammock<\/strong><\/span> is stretched between the two trees, and a log cabin stands behind that.<\/p>\n The campers are forbidden<\/strong> <\/span>to lie in the hammock. It belongs to the Warden. The Warden owns the shade<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n Out on the lake, rattlesnakes and scorpions find shade under rocks and in the holes dug by the campers.<\/p>\n Here’s a good rule to remember about rattlesnakes and scorpions: If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother<\/strong> <\/span>you.<\/p>\n Usually.<\/p>\n Being bitten by a scorpion or even a rattlesnake is not the worst thing that can happen to you. You won’t die.<\/p>\n Usually.<\/p>\n Sometimes a camper will try to be bitten by a scorpion, or even a small rattlesnake. Then he will get to spend a day or two recovering<\/strong> <\/span>in his tent, instead of having to dig a hole out on the lake.\u00a0But you don’t want to be bitten by a yellow-spotted lizard. That’s the worst thing that can happen to you. You will die a slow and painful death.<\/p>\n Always.<\/p>\n If you get bitten by a yellow-spotted lizard, you might as well go into the shade of the oak trees and lie in the hammock.<\/p>\n There is nothing anyone can do to you anymore.<\/p>\n The reader is probably asking: Why would anyone go to Camp Green Lake? Most campers weren’t given a choice. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys. If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy.<\/p>\n That was what some people thought.<\/p>\n Stanley Yelnats was given a choice. The judge said, “You may go to jail, or you may go to Camp Green Lake.”<\/p>\n Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wasteland: An area of land that cannot be used in any way.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence: That desert is a complete wasteland.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Shrivel: To\u00a0become smaller, dryer, and covered in lines. Usually it is because it is old.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence:\u00a0There were a few shriveled apples at the bottom of the bowl.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hover: To stay up in the air but without moving anywhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence:\u00a0A helicopter hovered above us.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Shade: An area where there is no light from the sun and so it is darker and not as hot.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence:\u00a0I’d prefer to sit in the shade.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hammock: A large piece of cloth you hang between two trees to sleep on.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence: She took a nap on the hammock in her backyard.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Forbidden: Something\u00a0that is not allowed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence: Smoking is forbidden in this area.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bother: To make the effort to do something.<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence:\u00a0Don’t bother making the bed – I’ll do it later.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Recover: To become healthy or happy again after an illness<\/strong><\/p>\n Example sentence:\u00a0It takes a long time to recover from surgery.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lesson 3: Holes There is no lake at Camp Green Lake.
